About the event
Every springtime, thousands of birds migrate north across the Gulf of Mexico from their winter homes and stop to rest along the Texas Gulf Coast. Meanwhile, egrets, herons, roseate spoonbills and other birds court their mates and build nests to lay eggs and raise their chicks. The Smith Oaks Sanctuary is owned and managed by the Houston Audubon Society with a large rookery where birds nest in the spring.
Our plan is to meet at the Baptist Church at 8:30 AM and carpool to High Island where we will spend a few
hours photographing birds of all kinds. The sanctuary has several large decks where photographers can stand in view of the nesting birds as well as trails throughout the wooded property. Insect repellant is important as mosquitoes are usually present. The cost to enter Smith Oaks is $10 for a day pass and $35 for an annual pass.
